UPDATE:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
So last summer a friend had this for sale:
A 1961 F100 with about 30k original miles. Really. I know you want to tell me that the odometer has rolled over but I genuinely believe it hasn’t. This is a friend and he knows these trucks well, he’s as honest as the day is long, as they say. I mean, look at this thing, the engine, everything does look like it spent most of its life inside a fire station in a town somewhere called Washington.
And it has a 4 speed manual and 4wd with low range. This is like, everything I want in a truck. I love the 60's look, and I definitely want a 4wd - my ‘72 is 2wd. My ‘72 is also a 3-speed three-on-the-tree which is “neat” but it’s not very practical. 1st gear is just too high to be useful.
I love the character of this truck, and its imperfections. I love that there’s still an axe mounted to the bed. It doesn’t help that it’s $1000 less this year, although the truck is exactly the same. And he’s probably very interested in buying my ‘72 back (he was the previous owner) as I have only improved it since I bought it 8 years ago and put about 18,000 miles on it over that time.
So this truck could likely be mine for about $3,000 plus my ‘72. That’s an easy lift, for a very cool truck. I don’t see the value going down (or up, really) any time soon, either. These things are cheap to own, cheap to run, and hold their value like a precious metal. Stay tuned.
Update! My wife said I can do whatever I want. She said she would miss my old truck but basically go right ahead if I want to get this one. Now it’s a matter of time and a couple of things falling into place. ...

Ive worked on an ex-firetruck like that one but from Kansas, and it was a hoot to drive. 4-speeds and manual brakes never go out of style.

I like it. I like it a lot. I don’t think I’d do anything to it other than to clean some stuff up. It’s perfect as-is. An honest truck willing to do an honest day’s work. Is that a 352?

I think it is a 352, I’ll have to confirm. I would do exactly nothing but perhaps a tune-up if needed, fuel filter, oil change, grease points if there are any... cosmetically, nothing. I like it as-is.

I was so baffled when I first saw that on an engine. Like, who thought that was a good idea??

I need this to go with my ‘79

LOL, I think that was my reaction when I stopped and looked at it last summer. Its price makes it a little too much for someone looking for a cheap older truck. And for the money you could get a similar truck with a nice coat of shiny paint, which is what most people want. The near-$8k asking price (at the time) is what kept it out of my hands last summer. I only drive my truck like 2000 miles a year at this point. But my kids are getting bigger and they’ll be able to ride in this a little more, very soon. My son certainly can go in it, he’s almost 4.

My father has a ‘79 with the 300ci straight 6, 4 speeds, and manual everything. I love that truck. The single thing I like least about my ‘72 is its 3-speed transmission. “Three on the tree” is novel, but not very practical for a truck.

I’ve never had the displeasure of driving a “three on the tree,” but from what I’ve heard, its as bad as it sounds.

I’m curious which “Washington” it came from... maybe there’s some history the owner can share with me... It does say “Capital Fire Mutual Aid System” but doesn’t look like the kind of thing a DC-area Fire Dept would have, even in 1961. For the record, it’s now in New Hampshire. There is a Washington, New Hampshire but it’s not the capital and it’s not all that close to the capital either.

It’s actually pretty nice, driving around town and on normal roads. It’s very low speeds that are just basically impossible. Moving a trailer around, or driving on a woods road very slowly... not happening. There is something a little relaxing about how long it takes to shift, and it’s very smooth and easy. I just want that damn 1st gear!

This is all kinds of awesome! I LOVE that back bumper!

I think I would need to weld a 2" square hitch receiver under that bumper... that giant pin would have to stay though. The hitch receiver would be under everything.
It is sweet though. A work truck for sure.

My browser history is the occasional host to multiple early 60's F100s. I love them.

Also, it would be replacing this:
A little body rust but it’s very solid, and drives smoothly, straight, and has zero squeaks or rattles. The interior is very nice. It runs perfectly. The bed is excellent inside. It’s better than it looks, that’s the best way I can describe it.
